HOW MANY DEAD?
1991

THE AIR WAR 17 JANUARY 2019 | 1000 SORTIES WITH 2000 POUND BOMBS | 336 TARGET AREAS | SURGICAL BOMBING | ASSESSING THE DAMAGE | 42 1/2 % EFFECTIVE | PIN POINT ACCURACY | HOW MANY DEAD?
A work that arose in response to reports in the newspapers about the effectiveness of American bomb raids in the Gulf War. For this work, 336 target areas are first drawn as squares with a target cross. A die of 20 (starts at zero) is thrown per target area. 0 = 0 drawn dots, 1 = 100 dots, 20 = 2000 dots. The dots are placed from the target cross in the middle of the square in a circular outward direction. Henk then calculates the effectiveness of his dots. 100% effectiveness = 336 squares x 2000 (max. number of dots) = 672.00 dots. The total number of dots thrown is 173.000, which results in an effectiveness of 25,74%. The effectiveness in the war claimed by the military authorities was 42,57%. Translated into dots, that would have meant 286.100 dots.
Afterwards, Henk thinks the visual result of this work is actually too good for the subject.
