A grid of 2,5 mm is drawn. Then a line of squares (1 unit) is first drawn with a pen above, below, left and right. It forms the framework. The dice are then thrown to determine over how many units (minimum 1, maximum 7) another line of squares will be drawn. First he determines the horizontal lines. Then the process is repeated to determine the vertical lines. The residual spaces between the horizontal and vertical lines are blackened. The bottom black line and the right black column are of course residual spaces.
